An abnormally high yen rate?

Do you understand anything about the graph on the right?

It is Euro vs. Yen exchange rate over the past 10 years.

In Japan there has been a huge uproar over the prolonged high yen rate.

Certainly, the yen rate has become higher compared to the last three years.

Three years ago 1 Euro was about 165 Yen.

Coscom's 2001.Kanji.Odyssey costs 4,900 Yen which was 30 Euros three years ago.

Nowadays it costs 47 Euro.  It has become 1.5 times more expensive.

(Of course it is still 4,900 Yen in Japan)

But, wait one minute.

Compared to ten years ago the yen rate was low instead.

How about the Dollar versus the Yen?

Compared to 30 years ago the Yen was 3 times more.

A car that cost one million Yen 30 years ago now costs more than three million Yen.

Conversely, for people in Japan, a hamburger that cost 300 Yen is now 100 Yen.

However, if you look back ten years ago (when the Yen rate was low) not much has changed.

Day after day, the unease caused by a one to two yen change (in the Yen rate) may be ridiculous.
